Emblems

laser etch on birch

2015

Emblems is a series of five stamps depicting the logo designs of the Abu-Shamat family business. All documents and any recollections of the factory such as stamps, soap wrapping papers, and floor plans were destroyed in 2002. Using drawings made from memory by my father and grandfather, I laser etched the emblems onto birch wood. Each one slightly differs over time; for example, the change of name Hassan to my grandfather’s name, Farid, the addition of the symbol of an olive, and the brand name, Saboon hab al zaytoon (Soap of Olives). With this projects, I am showcasing and achieving through art a piece of lost history.
